First Smiley Face!

Christopher was the first to make it to the smiley face on his behavioral clip system!!!  This means that he was caught FOUR times making good choices in the before and after school programs. When someone makes it to the smiley face, they get to choose a special reward. Christopher chose to bring in the movie Beetlejuice to share with the after school group! Congratulations, Christopher!! Keep up the great work :) 

 

Wednesdays with Wendy

Since the middle school gets out early on Wednesdays, Wendy and I have started a tradition of cooking a special treat!! We've had fun trying out new recipes and sharing our finished product with the elementary kids as an after-school snack.
Our first creation was puppy chow - Chex cereal combined with chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar. The recipe we used can be found here: http://www.momswhothink.com/easy-recipes/puppy-chow-recipe.html

The week before last, we made mini cheese and pepperoni pizzas on bagels. They were a huge hit! Ashley said that she wished she could eat these pizzas everyday!

Tin foil boat experiment

On Friday, the after school group designed boats using tin foil. The objective? To create a boat that would hold the most weight when tested with pennies. Using a water-filled sensory table, the kids were able to test out their creations by counting the number of pennies their boat could hold before it sank. 

Ashley's boat design held the MOST: a whopping 192 pennies!

Painting the sidewalk

Last week, the after school group made sidewalk paint using 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1/2 cup water, and 8 drops of food coloring. We learned about mixing colors, combining blue and green to make turquoise, blue and red to make purple and red and yellow to make orange. Then, we took our paint to the playground to create art on our blacktop! The kids had lots of fun painting their names and other designs outside!

All About Me Artwork

In the past few weeks, all of the children from the before and after school programs have created "All About Me" artwork, which is now being displayed in Weymouth's main hallway. The kids answered the questions: 

• What's your name? 
• How old are you? 
• What's your favorite food? 
• What's your favorite color? 
• What do you like to do for fun? 
• What do you want to be when you grow up?

Then, Ms. Alison and Abby took individual pictures of each person, asking them to pose however they liked. We ended up with a collection of pictures ranging from silly to serious, outgoing to shy. Finally, all of the kids painted a picture to express themselves through art. All of the school-age teachers worked together to compile the final product: a gallery as unique as the kids in our program! Check out our display below and stop in to see it in person!

Our New Garden

Although we've gone back to school after spring break, there is still a lot of spring fun going on in our school-age room before and after school! We've been continuing work on our garden, which is located by the blue picnic tables in the back corner of our playground. Once we finish digging out the grass to ready our garden, we'll be planting sunflowers, lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, and many other crops. As spring and summer progress, we'll watch our garden grow!

Happy Spring Break!

We finished our spring wall, adding painted lady bugs and a whole garden of flowers made from recycled materials! We were so excited with the finished wall that we posed for pictures with fun spring-related props in front of it! 

We've been having lots of fun gardening, swimming and reading Mr. Popper's Penguins this week as we enjoy some time off from school.
